Clive – 114th Street
“Art Along the Trail is a temporary outdoor exhibit, displayed along Clive’s landmark feature, the Greenbelt Park and Trail system, from May through October each year, with 2018 being the seveth year of the exhibition. The art pieces will be displayed in highly visible sites along the Greenbelt. Works are selected by an Art Along the Trail Selection Panel comprised of two members of the City’s Park Board, two members of the Public Art Commission, one City council member, one Clive resident or Clive business owner representative from the Chamber of Commerce, and one member of the local art community.
The Clive Public Art Program was established by the City Council in December 2007. The Public Arts Advisory Commission was established at that time to oversee the operations of the public art program. As part of the City’s commitment to enhance the ‘Distinct by Nature’ character of Clive with the addition of art in public places, the City Council adopted direct appropriation funding for public art. Since approval of the Master Plan, the City has awarded three commissions to artists to create artwork. The Art Along the Trail exhibition will continue the City’s efforts to promote aesthetic excellence and enhance the artistic vitality of Clive.
The Public Arts Advisory Commission is excited to continue this annual art exhibit into 2018 thanks to a Cultural Enrichment grant from Bravo of Greater Des Moines. ” City of Clive

The limitations we face are often the genesis of creativity, and that is the idea Limited Space was born from. In the spirit of this creativity, artists have been limited to less than 25 square feet of display space to push them to find a new approach to show their work.

Crying Out loud fundraiser
Healthy Birth Day, Inc. is teaming up with artists at Mainframe Studios in Des Moines to use art to shine a light on the racial disparities that exist in stillbirth. The statistics are alarming. 1 in 167 pregnancies ends in stillbirth. 1 in 204 pregnancies to white moms ends in stillbirth. 1 in 94 pregnancies to African American moms ends in stillbirth. African American babies are more than twice as likely to be born still. Hispanic, Asian and Native American babies are at greater risk, too. This is unacceptable.
On Thursday, October 18 at Mainframe Studios, we will have a short program and educational opportunities to learn more about how the free Count the Kicks app empowers moms and saves babies. The art will be auctioned off online during the month of October with all proceeds going toward our work to reach at-risk mothers.
Everyone is invited to the FREE event, taking place on October 18 at Mainframe Studios. Watch for the link to the online auction site to appear here on October 1.
Artist Shelly Berkowitz says, “This painting is a figure study on prepared canvas. The clouds and abstract skyscape are created with spray paints. The figure was drawn with acrylic ink and watercolor paints. The figure nestles into the skyscape with as much movement as possible, but with suspended, peaceful balance, while flying within what world it is embraced.”
Right now you can bid on this beautiful painting in a live online auction at bit.ly/countthekicks (the site features everything from photography and paintings to sculptures and graphic art, benefiting Count the Kicks). You can also view the art in person during an interactive event called #CryingOutLoud at Mainframe Studios in Des Moines. The event will take place on Thursday, October 18 from 5:30 to 8 pm at 900 Keo Way. Free and open to everyone, Crying Out Loud will give you an opportunity to view the art and meet some of the artists, create your own art, enjoy free food and music, and attend a short presentation on our work to address disparities.

Artist in Residence Showcase
For the last six months, five artists were given full access to the Des Moines Area515 Maker Space. They gamely put up with a move in the middle of it, and created a plethora of fine works.
At this event, you will be able to see their work, talk with the artists, and get a look into what happens when artists and a maker space come together.
Refreshments and cash bar available. Free drink for the first 25 attendees.
Event is made possible by Bravo Greater Des Moines and Prairie Meadows.
